Common jobs for Nepalis in India

- Security guards, drivers, factory workers and domestic workers.
- Office and professional jobs: IT, engineering, nursing, teaching and finance, often after studying in India.
How pay works in India
- Nepalis can live and work in India without a visa or work permit, under the 1950 treaty between Nepal and India.
- Minimum wages are set by each state and differ by job and skill level. Big cities usually pay more but cost more to live in.
- The Nepali rupee is pegged to the Indian rupee (1 INR = 1.6 NPR), so the NPR value of your salary does not change with exchange rates.
- Ask whether food and a room are included: many hotel, security and domestic jobs provide them, which changes what you really save.
Stay safe without a labour permit
Work in India does not go through the Department of Foreign Employment, so there is no labour permit, insurance or government contract to protect you. Keep your citizenship certificate safe and never hand it to an employer to hold. Ask for your agreed salary in writing, send money home through banks or licensed remittance services, and save the number of the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi. Be very careful with job offers that pay for your travel in advance, which is a common trick used by human traffickers.
