Gross vs net salary

European salaries are usually quoted gross (before tax). Income tax and social contributions are deducted, so take-home pay can be much lower. Always ask for the net (take-home) monthly amount, and whether accommodation is deducted.

A work permit is for one country

A work permit for Romania or Croatia lets you work in that country only. It does not let you move to work in Italy, Portugal or other Schengen countries. Agents who promise otherwise are putting you at risk.

Avoid scams

  • Large upfront payments for a "job offer" are the most common scam. Verify the employer and the agency first.
  • Check that the agency is licensed by the Department of Foreign Employment, and get a labour permit before you fly.
  • Compare the promised salary with the real salaries on this page.
